Google Confirms Its Tensor-Based Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro Will No Longer Receive Software Updates

Google has confirmed that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have reached the end of their software life cycle, with Android 17 QPR1 serving as the last update series for both phones. This makes it the first series with the Tensor chipset to no longer receive updates. Google excluded the two models from Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1.

This comes after Google quietly put Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 on a quarterly update track earlier this year. The phones launched in October 2021, and Google later extended their support to five years of OS and security updates, which means their support window runs through October 2026.

But a few updates are still left: the August security patch, the September Pixel Drop with Android 17 QPR1, and the October security patch. After that, Google will stop sending new Android versions and monthly security fixes to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

This does not make the phones unusable. Devices will keep working and installed apps will still run, but once support ends, they won’t receive new security patches, bug fixes, or OS refreshes. For Pixel fans whose primary concern is security, sadly, it’s time to move on to the next phone.
