This $300 Minimalist Flip Phone Could Help You Avoid Scrolling and AI

If you’re annoyed by the drive to constantly look at your smartphone but aren’t ready to switch to a “dumbphone,” here’s an in-between option: the Light Flip phone. Launched by the makers of the Light Phone on Tuesday, this minimalist clamshell phone targets people who want a device with navigation, basic audio entertainment, and calendar access, but without a distractingly app-heavy interface. It’s not a flip phone of yore, but it’s not a smartphone replacement, either.
The $300 Light Flip has a 2.8-inch OLED display with a 480 by 640 resolution, a physical keypad, a D-pad, and side buttons. (Notice the lack of touch controls.) Inside, it’s got a replaceable 1,800mAh battery, 126GB of storage, and 6GB of RAM, and it offers 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, 3.5mm headphone, nano-SIM, and eSIM connectivity. Its only camera is a 50mm rear sensor.
LightOS, the company’s custom Android-based software, doesn’t offer an app store. Instead, it supports basic functions: phone calls, texts, audio messages, alarms, music, podcasts, calendar management, GPS navigation, and notes.
The Light Flip—which is blocky in a sort of retro way and features a small exterior light that illuminates when you receive a call—comes in black, gray, navy blue, red, pink, and yellow.
The Light Phone, Inc. sees the Flip as a response to growing issues with AI features and constant notifications on today’s phones. The company wants a device that avoids the AI-driven ecosystem found on most of the current smartphones, reports Gizmodo.
Preorders are available now, with the earliest shipments slated for April 2027.
