Microsoft will launch new ‘super app’ for Copilot soon

It’s officially the year of the super app. OpenAI recently launched its own super app, which it just admitted is “kind of a mess.” And now Microsoft’s CEO has confirmed has a super app for Copilot launching soon.

Microsoft’s Copilot ‘super app’ will combine Cowork, chat, code, and more

Emma Roth writes at The Verge:

Microsoft is working on an AI “super app” that combines Copilot’s chat, coding, and agentic capabilities. During an earnings call on Wednesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the app will span “both consumer and commercial experiences” when it launches this year.

“Copilot is evolving rapidly from chat to Cowork to Autopilots,” Nadella said. “This quarter, we are bringing these Copilot experiences together, including code, in one super app… This is a major step forward, and I look forward to sharing more soon.”

OpenAI’s rollout of its own ’super app’ has turned into a mess. But that’s clearly not keeping other companies from avoiding the super app approach.

Perhaps Microsoft will be able to better deliver an all-in-one app and avoid OpenAI’s missteps.

That said, CEO Satya Nadella also recently expressed that the company is moving away from apps to focus on agents instead. The AI era is still so new, trends and best practices for building AI-centric interfaces are all very much in flux.

Apple, for its part, has shown no signs of moving toward a super app approach and instead continues to create new individual, specialized apps all the time. It will be interesting to see if that changes in the future.
