OpenAI Is Reportedly Developing a Screen-Free ChatGPT Smart Speaker for 2027

Just weeks after launching a keypad for vibe coders, OpenAI is said to be developing a portable, screen-free speaker as its next consumer hardware product, People familiar with the project described it to Bloomberg as an AI companion for the home, connecting users to ChatGPT and handling tasks on the web, on users’ phones, and in their homes.

The device is reportedly portable and rechargeable, with a camera, microphones, environmental sensors, and even some mechanical parts that may give it a degree of “emotional” expression. Before you start hoping for something cool-looking like Interstellar‘s TARS, know that, like many of the other mainstream home assistants-slash-speakers out there, OpenAI’s device is apparently the size and shape of a hockey puck. (Some reports describe it as donut-shaped, however, which could be refreshing.)

If the speaker’s voice function is anything like OpenAI’s new GPT-Live, it could offer a pretty natural listening and speaking experience that closely mimics real human conversations.

OpenAI has not confirmed Bloomberg’s report, meaning we lack official product specifications, pricing, launch information, or availability details. We also don’t know whether buyers would need a ChatGPT subscription for it to work, though we’d hope that for a rumored $300+ price point, a free plan would suffice.
