German Firefighting Robots Are Now Battling Blazes in Ukraine

Germany has provided a new package of humanitarian and emergency services equipment to Ukraine, including a raft of firefighting robots from German firm Magirus. With a strong pedigree for firefighting vehicles, Magirus also has a range of robotics designed for hazardous environments—perfect for the embattled homesteads of Ukrainian cities.
Ukrainian media outlet United24 reports that Germany supplied Magirus’s Alpha Robotics Wolf R1, LUF 60, the LUF-CRV, and Magirus AirCore TAF60. These are designed to fight fires using high-pressure water streams to cool and extinguish them. They’re also specifically designed to operate in dangerous and difficult environments, helping Ukrainian emergency responders reach the heart of blazes and bring them under control more readily.
Pictured above, the Wolf R1 is described by Magirus as a “tactical response robot,” combining firefighting with recovery capabilities. Its camera systems allow firefighters to get an up-close look at what they’re dealing with, without putting emergency workers at risk. It also has a tactical robotic arm that allows it to perform some actions fully remotely.
Other vehicles like the AirCore TAF60 are absolute powerhouses of water distribution, able to pump out thousands of liters of high-pressure water a minute.
As part of the transfer of emergency equipment, Germany also supplied fire trucks, fire pumps, minibusses, booster pumps to send water sources over longer distances, and protective equipment for firefighters and other emergency responders.
“In conditions of Russia’s brutal war, the challenges for Ukraine’s State Emergency Service have become even more complex,” Germany’s embassy head, Katrin Buchholz, said. “Ukrainian rescuers demonstrate extraordinary dedication to duty and heroism… Our partnership has lasted more than 10 years and goes far beyond the transfer of equipment: we strengthen institutions, exchange experience, and develop joint capabilities.”
Germany isn’t the only ally to have supplied Ukraine with firefighting equipment during the ongoing Russian invasion. The UK operates Fire Aid, which has delivered over 175 retired fire trucks from the UK since it began working with the country in 2012. It’s also delivered over 7,500 full personal protective equipment kits for firefighters, and a number of miscellaneous rescue vehicles.
