$30 Switch Game Is Unplayable Forever After Cloud Shutdown, Even in Single-Player Mode [Updated]
Fans of the Aliens: Fireteam Elite game are up in arms over it being effectively bricked on Nintendo Switch just three years after its 2023 release.
The $30 game—$60, if you bought the “Ultimate” edition—was a “cloud-only” release, so it required online server access to play, even in single-player mode. After the server shutdown in August, the game is dead on the original Switch, despite the sequel coming to the Switch 2 later this year.
Nintendo games that use cloud streaming are effectively not played on the local console at all. This isn’t like DRM online check-in; the game is actually streamed from a remote server, which is useful when the user’s Switch hardware isn’t up to the task. But it means that when that server goes dark, it doesn’t just take multiplayer with it—it takes the entire game.
That’s what’s happened with Aliens: Fireteam Elite, and players are now unable to play the game they spent real money on, nor is there an opportunity for a refund. At least in the case of the Kingdom Hearts Collection, Square Enix gave affected gamers a discount when they repurchased the game on the Switch 2.

Reddit users are both angered and unsurprised, with many suggesting that gamers who buy cloud-only releases should know what they paid for. Others decry the direction the industry is heading, suggesting that this kind of predatory game development practice is bad for the business and for gamers in equal measure.
It’s unlikely to be the last, though. Other cloud-only releases on the Switch have included Control, Resident Evil 7, and Hitman 3, all of which would have been too demanding to play on the console as designed. On top of this being a suboptimal way to play, with lag causing gameplay issues even in single-player, it now raises the question of how long these games will be available to play at all.
Apex Legends just went offline on Nintendo Switch, too. Although free to play, its paid-for cosmetics and other bonuses weren’t. Those are now lost, unless you log in to Apex Legends on the $449 Switch 2.
Update 8/11/26 @ 1:15 p.m.: Cold Iron Studios published an update via Discord acknowledging players’ frustration and promising a discount code on Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 later this year.
“While we previously communicated that the cloud service would end on August 5, we recognize that simply providing advance notice doesn’t change the fact that players paid for a game they can no longer play,” the message reads. “We are working on a program for players who purchased Aliens: Fireteam Elite on Nintendo Switch that will provide an option to receive a discounted voucher or credit on Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, which will run locally on Nintendo Switch 2 and will not require a cloud streaming service to play when it becomes available later this fall. We’ll share details on eligibility and how to participate as soon as they are finalized.”
