Android Auto Tests Its Own Speedometer in Google Maps
The Android Auto version of Google Maps has begun incorporating a live speedometer for a small group of beta users, suggesting a broader rollout is on its way.
The long-requested feature appears directly in the Maps UI on the car’s screen and shows the vehicle’s current speed next to the posted speed limit for that road, if available. It also changes color depending on the driver’s proximity to the posted limit.
It’s a bit weird that Google took this long to introduce a speedometer on Android Auto, given that it’s been available on Android phones for many years now. Apple CarPlay also received a live speedometer in 2024. Google’s other Maps app, the open-source Waze app, has offered speed-related alerts for years as well.
The speedometer functionality is available on Google Maps beta version 26.29.02.946673643 on Android Auto, as reported by 9to5Google, with sightings from countries like Canada and India. But as of now, downloading the beta version of Maps or Android Auto does not guarantee this new functionality, and Google has not published a timeline for wider release.
