Apple Might Want to Record Your Next Genius Bar Visit
Apple is reportedly testing an AI tool called Live Notes that records and summarizes conversations at the Genius Bar, Apple’s in‑store technical support. Per Bloomberg’s notable Apple insider Mark Gurman, the system listens to discussions between customers and technicians and then generates a text transcript and short summary that staff can see on their iPads.
Live Notes is designed to give technicians—called “Geniuses”—more time to talk to customers rather than typing notes during appointments. The AI automatically writes notes for the repair record, which employees can edit and tweak before saving.
The pilot is currently opt‑in, and both the customer and employee must agree before recording begins, Gurman writes. Apple reportedly discards the original audio after transcription is complete. Live Notes is also only being tested in a handful of stores, though we don’t yet have a list of which ones.
Even with the opt-in layer and Apple supposedly discarding audio it no longer needs, it’s unclear whether the brand uses Live Notes to train or assist its other AI tools or whether it might capture mentions of sensitive information, like users’ iCloud credentials. Genius Bar employees are also concerned that the transcripts could become yet another basis for monitoring performance, though this doesn’t appear to be the case yet.
