Gigabyte Aorus RTX 5080’s PCB Might Be the Weirdest One Yet


Gigabyte’s Aorus GeForce RTX 5080 Infinity Wood might be one of the strangest graphics card PCBs ever made. With everything crammed at the far end, its power connector is front-mounted, and its rear cutout leaves very little actual card space at the I/O end, relying instead on the cooler for structural integrity.

When Nvidia launched the RTX 50-series, its RTX 5090 Founders Edition was something unique. With its dual-fan passthrough system, it employed a very short PCB with a triangular cutout, offering impressively dense engineering and a smart cooling solution.

Gigabyte has done something similar, but flipped it on its head, effectively placing the dense core and memory layout at the opposite end of the card.

This means that the video outputs are connected only by a thin strip of PCB at the top and bottom, with the middle completely cut out, save for some small bracing elements—though Videocardz reports that they still have traces suggesting function as well as form. The cooler and backplate handle more of the card’s structural integrity and extend beyond the card’s far end to give the massive heatsink additional room.

The layout is designed to let air pass through the card rather than requiring air to be pulled from above or below. With the fan at the far end extending beyond the end of the PCB with the heatsink, it effectively allows both fans to pull clean air from below the card, and then push it through the heatsink and out the rear of the card. This pushes hot air upward, over the CPU heatsink, and out through the rear or top of the case as system fans dictate.

It should deliver impressive cooling capabilities, but showcases what a bizarre PCB redesign Gigabyte had to do to create such a card.

Also of interest is how Gigabyte rerouted the power connector. Most standard RTX 5080 and 5090 cards that use the 12V-2×6 power connector have it on the top middle of the card, but Gigabyte has moved it to the “front” end of the card, furthest from the rear of the case, and closest to where the power cables should enter the main body of the case.

That makes routing power to that connector far easier, reducing cable interference with airflow, and improving cable management at the same time. The power connector is also reinforced with a small metal block, though this appears to be structural rather than serving as a heat-dissipation system.

Gigabyte even includes an optional stealth panel to hide the power connector. Cute.
