Instagram Wants You to Be Open About Your AI Slop Profile
Instagram is beginning to enforce stricter rules for AI-generated profiles designed to look human. Accounts with fake personas must now display an “AI-generated profile” label to avoid having their overall reach limited.
The new label replaces Instagram’s old “AI creator” tag and will appear on the profile page and on posts that do not already disclose AI use. The company says it will proactively detect accounts that appear to feature an AI-generated person without the label. If it detects one, Instagram will notify the account and limit its content from appearing in recommendations. Using the label won’t reduce a profile’s reach.
Real humans who use AI tools to edit photos, write captions, or create graphics don’t need the profile label. Those who are required to use it can add it by going to Edit Profile and toggling on the “AI-generated profile” option. Instagram says affected creators can regain eligibility by adding the label or appealing if they believe the restriction was applied in error.
This update follows reports of fake AI influencers promoting products online, leading users to buy items that aren’t actually used or trusted by a real person. Users have reportedly told Instagram they don’t like finding out after the fact that a profile that seems human is actually AI-generated.
