Microsoft Is Retconning Windows 11 Memory Recommendations
How times have changed. After previously suggesting that 16GB of RAM should be the baseline for most Windows laptops and desktops, Microsoft has now removed any mention of 32GB from its Learning Center guides, as Windows Latest reports. This comes alongside its re-release of last year’s Surface Laptop and Surface Pro devices with just 8GB of RAM, marketing them as plenty for modern use.
For a number of years, 8GB has been considered the bare minimum for Windows 11, even though the system technically only requires 4GB. For anyone doing more demanding tasks than just web browsing and answering emails, 16GB helps a lot, and for gamers, 32GB is now far more common. But with RAM prices as they are, that kind of recommendation is harder to make, even for Microsoft.
After updating its Learning Center earlier this year to call 8GB the minimum and 32GB a “no worries” upgrade, it pulled that after the backlash and has now gone much further. There’s now no mention of 32GB anywhere, and 8GB is back on the menu as viable.

This is all down to the global DRAM shortage, which has seen kits of 16GB DDR5 go from less than $100 to hundreds of dollars, and high-speed kits can cost in the thousands. That’s meant everyone has to rejig their expectations of what memory is viable and affordable, and alongside Microsoft trying to make Windows 11 faster and more efficient, it’s also retconning its memory recommendations.
Someone should tell the Media Player developers.
The reasons for this change appear clear. Windows may be slightly more efficient and performative than it used to be, but it hasn’t changed so dramatically that 8GB is now suddenly more viable than it was a year ago. Windows 11 still runs far better on 16GB if you’re running demanding apps or web browsing with lots of tabs, and for professionals and gamers, 32GB and 64GB are useful upgrades. Just very, very expensive in 2026.
It’s no surprise that despite Microsoft’s claims, we don’t recommend 8GB laptops.
