Samsung’s New Tandem OLED Laptop Displays Promise to Pull You Deeper Into the Darkness
Samsung Display confirmed Monday that it has begun supplying new tandem OLED laptop screens that meet the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. The company has already agreed to provide these panels to several PC manufacturers, with Lenovo’s Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition the first to introduce its technology to market on July 8.
The Video Electronics Standards Association’s (VESA’s) True Black 1400 tier sets some clear standards for HDR quality on OLED laptop screens. Panels must hold black levels at or below 0.0005 nits and reach 1,400 nits peak brightness in a 10% window, raising the brightness requirement by about 40% compared with the previous True Black 1000 standard.
The new tier also requires full-screen brightness to reach at least 700 nits when the screen is fully on, as well as “more rigorous testing for color accuracy.”
Samsung’s tandem OLED has two layers and new materials, reportedly making it brighter and more efficient than regular laptop OLED screens. Beyond reaching 1,400 nits in the required 10% test window, Samsung says it can hit around 1,600 nits in smaller highlight areas, which is around 40% brighter than previous Samsung laptop OLEDs that hovered around 1,100 nits.
Reports from Samsung and VESA say this tandem approach also boosts durability by reducing stress on each layer, which offers more reliable performance over time.
ASUS, Dell, and MSI are planning to launch laptops with the new panels between late 2026 and 2027. Tandem OLED displays are also expected to feature on the next MacBook Pro.
